Musée de la Porte Dorée

Lumenbeam luminaires bring the bas-relief of a Parisian landmark to life.

In 2017, the Palais de la Porte Dorée embraced a new, dynamic lighting design by the City of Paris that utilizes Lumenpulse Lumenbeam luminaires to highlight its storied heritage while also conserving its historical and ornate architecture.

The lighting design's primary concept was to showcase the building's famous and gorgeous bas-relief murals that make up its facade, while also supplying the dynamic flexibility to change the lighting strategy to accommodate events and celebrations. Lumenbeam Large projectors were placed in the exact spot where older, iodide projectors were once mounted to lower the impact on the protected structure.

At the base of each column, a Lumenpulse Lumenbeam Grande luminaire was placed. The 100W Lumenbeam Grandes are color changing with a 40° flood optic, allowing for an even and wide light distribution.

Two new luminaires were also added during the retrofit. These 50W Lumenbeam Large Color-Changing luminaires — also with 40° flood optics — were placed on each flank of the main staircase to illuminate the fresco above the main entrance.

As an aesthetic addition to occasions held at the palace, the Lumenbeam Large and Grande luminaires can be switched from static colored uplighting to independently controlled RGBW capabilities. The DMX controller can programme, modify, and trigger lighting effects and shows. Dimming, speed, and color, can be altered with just a simple touch, creating a different color per event, fast-paced color changes, or pre-programmed light shows.

Now, the Palais de la Porte Dorée attracts new visitors during the night while also lowering energy consumption costs for The City of Paris. The relief murals come alive at night, whether in RGBW or static colors. Shadows elevate the figures, ships and animals leap from their historical contexts into the evening.

Thanks to the new lighting design with dynamic capabilities, the facade of the Palais de la Porte Dorée has become a nighttime "must-see."
