Åre Ski Resort
Leading Nordic lighting designer Ljusarkitektur created a night skiing attraction for all the family at Sweden's best-known ski resort, Åre. The scheme is based on folklore tales of land-forming giants. Lumenpulse fixtures were chosen for their light quality, ease of maintenance and ability to withstand tough sub-freezing weather conditions.
Swedish lighting designers Ljusarkitektur worked with Lumenpulse to turn one of the world's top ski resorts into a magical experience after dark.
Situated close to the Arctic Circle in Sweden, the Åre ski resort has been named one of the "world's top ski resorts" by travel magazine Condé Nast Traveller.
The new attraction uses light to create a night-time family experience, increasing the resort's revenue by extending its hours of operation after dark. The scheme is part of a major investment by owners SkiStar, who expect to make a return on their investment in two to three years.
The designers used local folklore tales of trolls and giants as a source of inspiration for their lighting design. Creative director Kai Piippo said: "This is both a landscape and an experience project. We have been able to use the best available technology both to continue and to reinvent the tradition of storytelling from the area that dates back hundreds of years."
The installation uses 240 color-changing Lumenpulse luminaires that cast an eerie moonlight glow over the slopes, creating an attraction that has boosted the resort's night-time economy. A number of projectors, including the Red Dot Award winning Lumenbeam LBX, were selected. Ljusarkitektur chose Lumenpulse fixtures for their high performance, ease of maintenance and ability to withstand tough weather conditions and sub-zero temperatures.
