Footbridge at Volkswagen Production Facility

Volkswagen's Chattanooga, TN, facility is a marvel in itself. The 2.7 million-sq-ft facility was built according to the most sustainable practices thanks to SSOE Group, a global engineering, architectural and construction management firm. As a result, the U.S. Green Building Council awarded the VW plant its highest level of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

When it came to lighting the 650-ft pedestrian bridge that connects the Volkswagen Academy with the manufacturing facility, SSOE Group's lighting designer, Aaron Albright, LC, wasn't just determined to use LED, he also wanted to illuminate the bridge in VW's corporate color.

"The choice was Lumendome Medium and Lumenbeam Large, with RGB capabilities to give us the punch that was needed to stand out on the landscape," explains Albright. "We were able to fine-tune the setting to emit a color that matches the VW blue." The luminaires can also be adjusted for other color variations during holidays and special events.

The Lumendome fixtures outline the contour of the bridge, while the Lumenbeams accent the anchor supports. The scheme draws attention to the bridge's elegant silhouette, and the VW hue makes it look striking against the night sky.
