Lumenpulse Lumentalk Installation at Next Rugby Named Lux Awards Controls Project of the Year

Montreal, Quebec

Lumenpulse’s Lumentalk technology enables networkable, connected lighting system at Next in Rugby, UK, allowing the store to control individual luminaires, test different lighting applications and extract meaningful data on the system’s performance, health and expected lifetime.

Lumenpulse (TSX: LMP) is proud to announce that its installation at the Next retail outlet in Rugby, UK, has been named the Lux Awards Controls Project of the Year. Next Rugby uses Lumentalk technology to create a networkable, connected lighting system, giving the store bi-directional control and communication of over 500 Lumenpulse luminaires. The installation beat out four other finalists for the honor.

"We’re very proud to have won the Lux Award Controls Project of the Year for the Next store in Rugby,” said Francois-Xavier Souvay, President and CEO of Lumenpulse. “Next had been looking for ways to reduce energy consumption across its stores, and with Lumentalk they can now quickly upgrade to LED and digital control, increasing flexibility and allowing them to test the effect of different dimming and lighting applications,” he said.

Lumentalk is a patented technology that uses existing AC mains as a bi-directional carrier for lighting control data. The technology works independently of any protocol, making it compatible with DMX, 0-10V, Dali or phase dimming. Lumentalk gives Next Rugby a connected lighting system, allowing the store to dim and control each Lumenpulse luminaire via DMX, and extract important information about performance, health and expected lifetime.

“Everyone is talking about the Internet of Things (IOT), and what the possibilities are for connected, digital technology. Well, here we have an actual installation – in an environment that demands ultimate flexibility – that puts this kind of technology into practice,” said Simon Morrison, Senior Vice-President Global Business EMEA at Lumenpulse. “Next Rugby can individually dim and control each luminaire in the store in real-time, creating different zones of lighting based on the customer experience they want for each zone. This sets up the ability to extract and analyze data to continuously refine the system. It really illustrates the power of the IOT, and the impact smart technology will have,” he said.

Launched in 2012, Lumentalk has since been specified for a number of high-profile projects, bringing LED and digital control to the massive Blatnik Bridge in Minnesota; increasing flexibility at the Buckley Recital Hall at Amherst College; and allowing the Castro Street Business District in San Francisco to install decorative lighting – without the cost and disruption of having to install new data wiring.

“We are extremely pleased with how Lumentalk continues to solve these complex lighting control challenges,” said Greg Campbell, Senior Vice President Engineering and Chief Technology Officer at Lumenpulse. “The technology’s reliable, bi-directional digital communication uses only the existing power lines, providing a cost-effective lighting network. This sort of connectivity really shines in the ever-changing retail environment, letting retailers adjust to ambient light or re-zone for new fashion rollouts on the fly. The possibilities with Lumentalk are endless,” he said.

About Lumentalk

Lumentalk is a patented technology that enables digital control of LED lighting over existing AC power lines, thus reducing installation costs and facilitating the conversion to LED lighting. With Lumentalk, electrical wiring becomes a stable, noise-free, high-speed communications link, enabling LED fixtures to be controlled without additional wiring for data. The technology is protocol independent, making it compatible with common dimmer and control standards such as Triac, 0-10V, DALI, DMX and ELV.
